History of Social Media
  • It can be said that social networking started from AIM and ICQ instant messaging. Users were allowed to make a profile, post messages, chat with friends, and eventually post a picture. The first social networking site to combine all of the features previously available was launched in 1997 called sixdegrees.com. It allowed users to create a profile, post pictures, add friends that others could see, and communicate with the friends. The people who were on this site can be considered early innovators or techies who were ahead of their time, and got bored with the site because there were not enough people on it. From there other sites were developed to allow users to created different kinds of profiles, from friendly, to professional, to dating or political. After that countless social networking sites have been launched, allowing the user to decide what area they would like to be in, for example professional sites, hobby sites, dating sites.. etc. Myspace became so popular because it remained free, and soon introduced the music section, allowing bands to post a profile, or celebrities. Facebook allows people to become fans of almost anything. There are also ways to make an event and invite people, share games and applications. The possibilities are becoming endless.
  • The social networking bomb did not just go off in the United States. All over the world millions and millions of people were joining, although not always the same sites became popular, in one way or another, people would find a site they liked.
  • The makers of these social networking sites are continually making changes to make it more enjoyable and safe for everyone to use.

  • Youtube: Youtube was started in 2005, and in 2006 was one of the fastest growing sites in the world and was soon ranks the 5th most viewed site, moving past myspace.

  • Flickr: Flickr was launched in 2004, it now has over 4 billion images, and the official white house photographer uses flickr.

Wiki/blog history: a blog is a website that is much like an online journal. It is created and updated by the user who can share their information with whoever they please. Early blogs were e-mails and the BBS (Bulletin board System.) The first blogs were created in 1994, who had to manually adjust the website every time they wanted to share more information. Later adjustments allow users to update and share information more easily. Blogs can come in many shapes and sizes. They can be personal, political, for companies, for a celebrity/media outlet, news, cooking, shopping; you name it, there is a blog for it.
